We are troubled by your report from February third headlined, "Failed Messiah Blogger Stepping Down" with the sub-headline, "Orthodox Jewish watchdog calls it quits."

A blog dedicated to real, hyped or fake negatives of people in one community, a blog which uses lies and innuendo to defame individuals and institutions of one community, is not worthy of the good-citizen term "watchdog." Suspending defamatory and bigotry work is hardly a high-held position from where someone would be "stepping down."

Imagine the outcry if someone ran a FM-style blog against Muslims, Arabs, African Americans or Latinos the way FM was dedicated against Orthodox Jews. Self-respecting publications with honorable journalistic standards would not quote nor use the blog for a source as The Jewish Week did with FM dozens of times. You would proclaim good riddance that a bigot who used inaccuracies, lies, and misrepresentations to malign people in one community is - for now - done with his bigoted work.

Wrapping one self in a cause - as FM purported to do - is not a pass to use inaccuracies, lies, and misrepresentations to malign people in a specific community. It would be hypocritical to run a blog with a purported cause to help the youth in the African American community, but then dedicate the blog to real, hyped or fake challenges from individuals and institutions in the same community.

The Jewish Week as an entity should hang its head in shame for legitimizing a defamatory hate blog and for seeing it off with a laudatory news item last week.
