An Urgent Request by OJPAC

4/3/2016

It is imperative for news agencies (and government officials) to monitor their social media platforms and websites for bigoted and dangerous comments. Just as media have no obligation to provide a TV crew or newspaper space for everyone who wants to exercise their first amendment right, news agencies have no obligation whatsoever to provide a platform for comments. Media agencies should use their own discretion which content goes and which stays in the comment section just as they do in print or on TV. The First Amendment guarantees the right of free speech; it does not oblige someone else to provide you a platform. You have something to say? Yell it from your window; publish your own newspaper or run your own blog.
